Marilyn Newton, award-winning and groundbreaking Nevada photojournalist, will receive an honorary doctorate at the Friday afternoon 推荐杏吧原创 commencement ceremony.
Her career spanned 52 years, officially starting in 1963 but actually beginning a few years before that. Hired at age 12 by the Carson City Nevada Appeal as a papergirl, Newton had her first story (a two-paragraph sports story) published at the age of 12 and her first photo published just a year later. After graduating from Carson High School in 1962, Newton attended the 推荐杏吧原创 and was hired by the Reno Evening Gazette after just one semester. Within two weeks she wrote her first front page story and within six months she was a photojournalist for the paper.
Over her career she has won close to 400 national, regional and state awards and earned one Pulitzer nomination. In 1992 she was named Nevada Photographer of the year by Shooting the West. In 2002 she was inducted into the Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame and also won the national media award by the National Leukemia Society for her photos of a childhood cancer cluster.
She has shot crime scenes, spot news, sports, entertainment, business, environmental portraits and historic events throughout the Northern Nevada and Northern California region.
Countless photos of Newton’s are stored in the Special Collections and University Archives in the , which contains photos taken from 1959 to 2014 for use in news stories, encompassing 55 years of RGJ staff photography.
While University librarians don’t yet have a precise count on the number of images, but there are well over half a million images that are fully indexed and available and they estimate the collection as a whole has between one and two million images.
