Scholarships, fellowships and internships

Several scholarships, a fellowship and internship opportunities are available for CoLang 2026. 

 

Available scholarships

Applications for scholarships from the CoLang 2026 Local Organizing Committee, the Endangered Language Fund, the Western Regional Native American Language Resource Center (WRNARLC) and American Indian Language Development Institute (AILDI) will be accepted until April 10, 2026. These scholarships share an application form.

CoLang 2026 Internal Scholarships

A small number of scholarships are available. Recipients of this scholarship will receive one or some combination of the following: registration for workshops only or for workshops plus practicum, housing in a double-occupancy dorm room on campus and meals on campus (breakfast, lunch and dinner, Monday through Friday only).


Endangered Language Fund Scholarship

The  (ELF) is offering three scholarships for individuals from Indigenous backgrounds. Awardees are expected to attend all three weeks of CoLang (workshops + practicum). The scholarship provides for registration, housing in a double-occupancy room on campus and meals on campus (breakfast, lunch and dinner, Monday-Friday) for three weeks.


Western Regional Native American Language Resource Center / American Indian Language Development Institute Scholarships

western regional native american indian language development instituteThe  (WRNALRC) and the  (AILDI) are offering a limited number of scholarships for current residents of Arizona, California, Nevada, or Utah whose goals in attending CoLang align with the goals of WRNALRC and AILDI. Recipients of this scholarship will receive housing in a shared dorm room on campus, reimbursement for travel costs (e.g., flight or mileage) of up to $500 and a stipend of $250 after the end of the Institute upon the participant’s completion of a final report.

How to apply for the scholarships

There is one application form for the scholarships from the CoLang 2026 Local Organizing Committee, ELF and WRNALRC/AILDI. In the form, you will be asked what assistance you are requesting and what parts of the Institute you will be attending. Based on this information, you will be considered for the scholarships you are eligible for.

You will be asked to write about why you want to attend CoLang 2026, what experience you bring to language revitalization or linguistic fieldwork, what difference receiving a scholarship would make to you, and how attending CoLang will support your future community or language work. You may also submit up to 2 optional letters of recommendation by emailing them to colang2026@unr.edu by April 10, 2026. You are eligible to apply for these scholarships if you will be at least 18 years of age prior to June 20, 2026. All recipients are required to attend a full schedule of workshops during the two-week workshop period and, if registering for three weeks, the full week of the practicum as well.

The deadline to apply for scholarships is April 10, 2026 (11:59 p.m. PDT).

 

Linguistic Society of America Fellowship

The Emmon Bach Fellowship is a named fellowship which covers registration, lodging, and a meal plan during the workshops and practica at CoLang 2026, plus additional limited funds to help defray the cost of travel. Therefore, the person awarded this fellowship is expected to attend the full duration of CoLang (June 22-July 10 – the full two weeks of workshops and the week of practica). There will be one successful candidate for this fellowship.

linguistic society of america logoTo be eligible for this scholarship, applicants may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Graduate students should not have received their Ph.D. before the completion of the Institute.)

Applicants do not need to be US citizens. However, applicants will be responsible for any visas and/or other documentation allowing them to attend in the US. The LSA is not able to assist with this process except for providing a letter of invitation upon request. To be eligible to receive the fellowship, applicants must register for a full course load at the Institute if awarded one, though they need not register for the Institute before learning whether they have been awarded a fellowship.

The application for the Emmon Bach Fellowship is separate from the application for the other scholarships. Applicants may apply for the Emmon Bach as well as for other scholarships, but if they choose to do so, they must complete separate applications for both.

How to apply for the fellowship

To complete your application, you will be asked for information about your academic background, including a degree earned or in progress. You will also be asked about your experience with language documentation and language revitalization – you can discuss, for example, your experience with any of the following:

  • working with speakers of or archival material in an endangered language
  • other language activities (e.g., language learning or teaching, formal or informal mentoring, using archives or previous recordings, recording languages through video, audio or writing
  • language continuity, revival or revitalization
  • archival research
  • any additional relevant expertise

You must also submit a statement of purpose of no more than 750 words explaining why you want to attend CoLang 2026, how the Institute can help further your studies, what you have to bring to CoLang, and what difference it would make to you if you receive a scholarship. Please include a description of your commitment to use your learnings from CoLang in the future.

You will also be asked to give the names of two people who can write letters of recommendation for you. The letter writers must send the letters to colang2026@unr.edu by the same deadline (April 10, 2026).


Deadline

LSA Fellowship applications are due Friday, April 10, 2026 (11:59 p.m. PDT). Notifications will be sent out in late April. Awardees must complete registration by May 15, 2026.

 

CoLang Web Committee Intership

The CoLang Web Committee is accepting applications for a Summer 2026 Intern (late May-August) to assist with facilitator outreach and communications leading up to and during CoLang 2026, and managing the intake process for and organization of materials for the online repository after CoLang 2026 has concluded.

The main goal of the online CoLang repository is to support contributors and hosts in organizing effective institutes, with the plan to serve a wider audience in the future by releasing appropriate workshop information for continued educational use with facilitator permission. These materials may include slideshows, example documents and educational content of the workshop. A brief video introducing the repository is available .

We are seeking applicants with experience or interest in communications, conference participant support, open-source digital property, digital materials access and familiarity with the field of Indigenous language reclamation. The internship is open to applicants who will be physically present at CoLang 2026 in Reno, Nevada, this summer.

CoLang Web Committee Intership objectives

The primary goal of the internship shall be to support the Web Committee and Local Organizing Committee in managing communications and coordinating the intake of materials for the online CoLang repository. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Attend monthly Web Committee meetings as a liaison for the Local Organizing Committee
  2. Communicate with CoLang 2026 facilitators to inform them of the online repository and intake process, respond to any questions and coordinate the receipt of consent forms and course materials
  3. Assist the Local Organizing Committee with communications for facilitators and participants before and during the Institute, provide general troubleshooting support during, and coordinate the archiving of administrative and planning documents after the Institute
  4. Collect and organize materials as facilitators and the Local Organizing Committee submit them and add them to the CoLang repository with appropriate metadata
  5. Support the Web Committee presentation at the CoLang Business Meeting and any additional in-person outreach at CoLang 2026.

Reporting, compensation and credit

This is a hybrid internship in collaboration with the Local Organizing Committee in Reno, Nevada, and CoLang Web Committee members in EDT, CDT and PDT time zones. Intern must be physically present at CoLang 2026 at the ÍÆ¼öÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´, between June 22 and July 10, and will receive complimentary tuition for CoLang 2026. The CoLang Web Committee cannot reimburse costs associated with travel, accommodations, or a meal plan. Start and end dates are flexible. The intern may begin after Memorial Day, May 25, and must end by Aug 31.

Intern shall report to the CoLang Web Committee. Intern shall receive a stipend of $500 at the end of the three-month internship period and is expected to devote at least 33 hours to internship tasks.

The CoLang Web Committee welcomes students interested in fulfilling school credit through the internship. Please reach out to your department to see if this is possible. We are only able to accept those legally authorized to work in the United States at this time. However, we are happy to work with any interested applicant to support their authorization process.

The Institute on Collaborative Language Research, also known as CoLang, is a biennial gathering where people from various backgrounds can learn about language documentation, descriptive linguistics and language revitalization from each other. The Institute emphasizes community-based approaches to language revitalization and collaboration at all stages of this work - from designing documentation or teaching projects to activism or archiving materials for future use. CoLang aims to blur the lines between community and academia, learners and facilitators, and among areas of specialty. CoLang welcomes all people interested in community-based, collaborative language work.

ÍÆ¼öÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ CoLang Web Committee

The CoLang Web Committee was established in 2020 to develop, manage and maintain the permanent digital presence of the CoLang Institute. The Committee is responsible for the  and the internal collection and organization of planning materials in the CoLang Repository. The Committee is responsible to the CoLang Advisory Council via the Colang Advisory Council’s Web Representative, and also works closely with Local Organizing Committees to support efforts such as digital archiving and communications.
