Brand information for Research & Innovation

Why we have division branding

The premise of our branding work is to provide a consistent, up-to-date look that more closely aligns with the University’s brand standards and use of the Block N logo. The identifier for Research & Innovation includes the Block N and we provide guidance on how to present your division unit/program in a corresponding text treatment.

The strong benefit of branding at the division level is that the audience will instantly recognize your program as being part of the University and Research & Innovation and we will simplify our identity for our audiences.

Overview of division logo usage and individual office/unit names

All materials (printed and digital) for the division will carry the Research & Innovation identifier (logo). Individual office/program names will all use the same fonts: Myriad Pro Light Condensed or Myriad Pro Bold Condensed, depending on the application. While this pertains to marketing and communications materials, effort will be made to carry this through to operational materials such as correspondence, documents and agendas.

Avoid the use of initials or acronyms when referring to your office/program—spell the words out whenever possible (ex. use Enterprise & Innovation, rather than E&I).

Please do not use “Office of” (ex. “Sponsored Projects” rather than “Office of Sponsored Projects”).

The only division unit name that will appear with the Block N is Research & Innovation (as shown in the logos below). Your office/program name will need to be separated from the division logo. Here are a few examples of this treatment:

Vehicle decals

An Environmental Health & Safety truck shows the division identifier on the driver and passenger side doors and, separated from the identifier, the office title with phone number and website URL is on both sides of the bed shell and uses the font style specified for division sub-units.

A Sponsored Projects brochure shows the office title – using the font style specified for division sub-units – at the top of the page. The Research & Innovation division identifier appears at the bottom of the page, separated from the office title.

A Research Integrity polo shirt shows the front and left-side views. The Research & Innovation division identifier is placed on the left-chest location of the shirt. The left-side view shows the Research Integrity office name placed on the sleeve cuff of the shirt in the font style specified for division sub-units.

Logo downloads and styling information

Our division identifier (Research & Innovation with the Block N) should appear on all of your documents, print materials, presentations and communications collateral.

Minimum size

The height of the Block N in our identifier should never be smaller than 3/4 of an inch. The logotype must always be scaled along with the Block N to maintain the proportions given. If you have materials that don’t allow for this minimum size, please contact Alex Vanderhoff for assistance.

Required spacing

Please leave sufficient clear space (free from distracting elements) around the identifier on all sides. In general, the clear space should be one-half of the height of the Block N. When placing the logo over photographs, make sure there is sufficient contrast against the background so the logo and logotype reads clearly.

Identifiers with and without the division tagline

You can use the tagline version of the logo wherever you feel that the presentation of the “whole” division brand is useful. The identifier without the tagline will probably be used more commonly.

It’s up to you which version you use!

Fonts

The University’s fonts are Myriad Pro and Minion Pro (as a secondary font).

These fonts have been purchased for University use, but most computers do not have these fonts installed. This can cause issues if, for example, you have designed a PowerPoint using Myriad Pro and you are using a computer that is not your own to present on—if that computer doesn’t have the font, all of your text will convert to a default. This is also the case if you’re using Myriad Pro as your email font, in Word documents that you share with people…etc.

If you are creating a PDF or print materials you should use Myriad Pro and Minion Pro.

For Word, PowerPoint, Excel, emails (documents that aren't PDF or printed), please use Arial as this is a universal font and is approved for University communications in lieu of the official fonts.

Templates

Please review these descriptions before using the templates.

Word documents for general use

There are two options for Word templates: one with the division identifier and tagline, and one with the identifier only. Use these for your internal communications, meeting agendas and other general use.

Letterhead for official University communication

We use the official University letterhead for professional communication on behalf of the University. Stationery can be ordered through our vendor. There are a few different electronic versions for you to download through NevadaBox. Please see the note in the fonts section about Myriad Pro vs Arial fonts, and use the Arial letterhead version if you aren’t printing or converting this file to a PDF. In the footer, please include "Research & Innovation" in bold, as shown, and then your unit name under that in regular font. The remaining information is specific to the unit (URL, etc.). Do not use "www" in the URL, just "unr.edu/..."

PowerPoint

These division-branded slides can be used for internal and external presentations. The slides include multiple options for backgrounds – you'll see the different versions of master slides in the "new slide" dropdown. A collection of research-related photos are incorporated into some of the slide background designs. Please contact Alex Vanderhoff with questions regarding the PowerPoint template or if you would like to have your presentation reviewed.

Email signatures

Here are a couple of examples of email signatures and instructions for creating your signature in Outlook.

Please use Arial as your email signature and email body font.

Some examples of optional elements are:

  • Hyperlinking the Research & Innovation logo to the division homepage or adding your own unit's homepage URL as text and linking the text
  • Social media bugs (these can link to the Research & Innovation social channels, the University's social channels, your program’s social media or your personal/professional social accounts)
  • Confidentiality statements/disclosures

These optional elements should be placed below the division logo with your contact info above the logo, as shown.

Division guidelines for business cards

  • All cards will use “Research & Innovation” for the department field (this is pre-set in the template)
  • Please do not use “Office of” (ex. use “Sponsored Projects” instead of “Office of Sponsored Projects”)
  • URL format: unr.edu/sponsored-projects (do not use www.)
  • In most cases, do not duplicate your office name in your title and address—pick one location
  • Your mailstop should be listed after 推荐杏吧原创/XXXX; use four digits for the mailstop and there’s no need to put it in the zip code (just use 89557)
  • The Research & Innovation identifier is the default for the back of the card. You may decide what web address to use for the QR code on the back of the card. This could be your unit's web address, your virtual business card address, or the University's top-level research and innovation page: unr.edu/research-innovation.

Examples of formatting options

Here are some different ways to format your business card. In the ordering portal, please be sure to use the "UNR Research & Innovation Vertical BC" design template.
